Industrialist Crayton is fatally struck between the eyes by lightning on his estate, in exactly the same place where his wife died twenty years earlier due to the same phenomenon.

He has two sons.
Ron, the eldest, is a London-based art dealer and self-made man, who enjoys life and the enticements that the London of the one-percenters has to offer him.
The other son, Charles, works for his father's company and lives on the estate with his wife and child.

The cause of the accident is initially dismissed as a regrettable coincidence: “lightning apparently strikes the same spot more than once.”
